Volcano Visitor Center
Volcano Visitor Center is a visitor center in Iceland that presents geological, historical, and cultural information about Icelandic volcanoes. The building covers 7,300 square feet and is set into the volcanic terrain, joining subterranean spaces with a sculpted roofscape. The material palette is simple, consisting of concrete, metal, and glass, with a green roof designed to support local plants. Parametric design tools shaped the curved form while keeping a rational geometry. Circulation guides visitors to experience the horizon, the land, and nature.
Volcano Visitor Center Exhibition by Haisheng Xu has been highlighted as a grand illustration of architectural design by the A' Design Award. Volcano Visitor Center Exhibition earned the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2026. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is an international, juried, academic and meritocratic design accolade which celebrates outstanding design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
