The Surface and Body
The Surface and Body is an education center in Taichung, Taiwan, with a floor area of about 1089 square meters. The building is formed by an inverted L shaped wall and a rectangular concrete body. Fair faced concrete is the main material, and the simple shape suits the plain texture. The wall is folded to create windows set at 30 degrees, which open wide views and limit direct sunlight. A large glass curtain brings natural light into the main space and reduces the use of artificial lighting. The volume is set back to form a sheltered urban open space.
The Surface and Body Education by Jung Tien Hsu has been recognized as an innovative example of architectural design by the A' Design Awards. The Surface and Body Education was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2023. The A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award is a juried, academic and highly prestigious design prize which recognizes excellent design of skyscrapers, museums, residential buildings, commercial complexes, educational institutions, religious structures, infrastructure designs, landscaping projects and more.
